The week, where'd it go?!
This week has been a complete blur! Classes have been good, we discussed World War I after American intervention, how policy is adopted in the European Union, some influential women in the feminist movements beginning (and how Nietzsche is totally anti-feminist), and international relations relating to the creation of Israel and the successive years. Outside of class, we celebrated Sally's birthday, played monopoly again and went to an IEP party (Barbarians and Barbies, it was hilarious!) I'm starting to get things lined up in the way of exams so as I know more I'll let ya know!

I was grateful to hear that your mother arrived safely in Munich and that you were able to connect at the airport. Looking back at our week in London and Paris it was one of the best weeks of my life. I'm sure that your mother will create similar memories this week.
ReplyDeleteI watched Casey's football game today. The afternoon was the perfect backdrop for the game, with blue skies and a bright sun yielding almost balmy temperatures. The trees on Washington Boulevard lent color to the occasion. The perfect setting was cruely tarnished by reality. Immaculate Heart played against Christ the King and it was not pretty. The score at the end of the day was 34-6. Christ the King outplayed them on every point. Season's over and it's time to move on.
You sound satisfied with your classes. It would be fun to discuss them in person (and I'm sure you're doing that with your mother this week). I would be especially interested in the creation of Israel. The British did some things that were short-time pragmatic and long-term disasterous. The partition of India is another example. When you have the opportunity please read Freedom at Midnight. It's an account of the tragic reality the British released with their thoughtless appproach to the partition of the subcontinent. I'll not saying that I would have been any more competent, but in my opinion, they really mucked it. (Something else that you might enjoy is The Jewel and the Crown. It's a trilogy that became a PBS mini-series in the 1980s.)
Lasagna is cooling in the kitchen as I make chicken stock. It's a quiet evening and I'll go to bed soon. Jean Richcreek called at 8:00 pm to let us know that Kazu and Lin missed their connection in Chicago. They are driving to Indianapolis so we won't see them until tomorrow.
